FAQs
You might have questions. Here are some answers:
-
In person tutoring is currently available in IL, MA, NY, NJ, CA, FL, and LA. Sessions can be held in your home, at a library, or at a local coffee shop of your choosing.
Most tutoring occurs virtually even in these states. Our tutors are carefully selected for their incredible ability to provide effective tutoring in a virtual environment. Many of our students have had negative experiences with virtual tutoring in the past, but they love our tutors! Tutors use drawing tools to illustrate concepts clearly on screen.
-
This depends on your needs. Generally, students meet weekly. Academic subject sessions tend to last 1 hour, and test prep lasts 1.5 hours. If a student has a low grade or only has a few weeks to prepare for the ACT/SAT, more frequent sessions may be recommended. We are happy to work with you to schedule sessions as frequently or sporadically as you like.

We hear this a lot. Not everyone is skilled at virtual instruction. Our tutors are carefully selected for their ability to effectively teach virtually. They use drawing tools to highlight concepts and to clearly illustrate problems. All tutors have a touch screen or drawing tablet so they can neatly work through material. Tutors will screenshare your worksheets (which you can send them via text or email) so that you can work on them together directly on screen. It is actually easier to do this than to sit side by side. When sitting next to each other, it can be challenging to follow the work of the student or tutor as they are writing because their arm is blocking their work. This means tutoring time is spent less efficiently. Also, keep in mind that during 2020-2021, teachers did not have any training for virtual learning and did not have any interviews or tests to make sure they were qualified to teach in this way! We have never had a student stop because of the virtual format! Many end up preferring it.
In person tutoring is also available depending on your area. We currently have tutors who live in Illinois, Boston, New York, New Jersey, and California.

Sometimes, the way your teacher is explaining (or not explaining) material isn’t the most effective way for you personally to learn the material. Everyone learns differently. With tutoring, there is more time and opportunity for a personalized approach. Your tutor will cater their teaching style in the way that is best for you. They may teach you alternative ways to solve problems or will help you understand the method your teacher is using. Or both. Your tutor will also teach you how to study so you spend less time studying and more time doing other things you enjoy!
Some students want tutors for enrichment. Or perhaps they have a good grade but want/need a higher grade due to the competitiveness of college and graduate school programs. Your tutor will help you achieve your academic goals. Students are often surprised how quickly their understanding and their grades improve once they start tutoring

Please see our “About” page for details about our methodology. All tutors are skilled in breaking down concepts simply and clearly. They also explain concepts in a variety of ways, pinpointing what works best for each student’s learning style.
Tutors use the Socratic Method, which increases retention. Tutors ask students “what would you do next,” or “okay, why did you take that step?” as they work through material together. This helps uncover gaps in understanding and provides teachable moments. Students are active participants during the session. Many tutors follow the “I do, we do, you do” approach to help students master challenging material throughout a session. -
There is a lot to cover! The ACT and SAT both have 4 sections. We will typically spend the first half of the session carefully reviewing homework. We review things such as “was there a way to do a problem more efficiently, why is the wrong answer wrong, why is the right answer right, what test strategy can we use to avoid this mistake next time?” The second half of the lesson consists of teaching new content, which will be practiced for HW the following week. As we finish covering content and are fine tuning our strategy with completing and reviewing practice tests, we often cut sessions down to 1 hour.
